Gatwick MRC & HART Base Crawley West Sussex
A new two-storey Make Ready ambulance centre and Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) base has been constructed on a brownfield site in the Gatwick area.
The centre includes a main workshop with vehicle ramps for servicing the fleet, and make ready bays where the ambulances are cleaned and restocked in readiness for the next shift. The HART facility stores ten specially equipped HART vehicles together with ancillary accommodation which includes training rooms for gases, chemicals and smoke exposure, underground training tunnels and a bespoke training rig for treatment and rescue at height. Construction comprises reinforced concrete ground beams, a reinforced concrete ground bearing slab with a portal steel frame and precast concrete planks to the first floor. The building is clad with Kingspan profiled insulated composite wall panels. A vehicle washing facility with high level gantry utilises grey water from the rainwater harvesting system.
Mechanical and electrical installations include vehicle extract systems, specialist oil supply/removal systems, compressed air supplies, and motorised doors with manual override and safety systems.
Extensive external works include the installation of a 32,000 litre underground fuel tank, design and co-ordination of below ground foul and storm drainage, below ground training tunnels, access chambers and escape hatch, fuel pipe lines, services cabling, generator supplies and duct runs for CCTV, flood lighting and access control systems. Extensive parking facilities have been provided together with access road and crossovers from the HART facility.
