Building 11 Tesla Engineering Storrington
Tesla Engineering is dedicated to the design, manufacture and support of resistive and superconducting electromagnets, gradient coils, composite materials, generator coils, motors and consultancy to the science, medicine and industrial markets.
Building 9, an earlier project completed by the Company comprised a 2,226m2 industrial building. Building 11 is similar in size and enables Tesla to expand its manufacturing process. The building is set into the ground by approximately 4 metres along the eastern half, to achieve a finished floor level similar to that of unit 9; thereby reducing the apparent height and bulk.
Work commenced with a major bulk excavation and the installation of a Phi retaining wall. All spoil was removed from site. Substructures comprise reinforced concrete pads with a power floated ground floor slab. The steel framed building which is 9.64 metres in height to the eaves has a built-up system for roofing and cladding panels with a brickwork/blockwork plinth to the workshop area.
A major feature of the building is the craneage; one 20t and two 10t travelling gantry cranes which span 27.8 metres, supported by the steel frame. In all 161 tonnes of structural steelwork was installed.
Groundworks and civil engineering which were carried out by the Company’s in-house department included a car park, access roads, service yard areas and footpath. A new electrical substation and an enhanced gas and water supply, which would also provide for any future development, has been installed.
