Building 4 Tesla Engineering Storrington
Tesla Engineering is dedicated to the design, manufacture and support of resistive and superconducting electromagnets, gradient coils, composite materials, generator coils, motors and consultancy to the science, medicine and industrial markets. Their headquarters are based in Storrington with subsidiaries located in The Netherlands and the USA.
The project comprised a compact infill extension to enhance the internal crane facilities at the fabrication unit, and follows four earlier successfully completed projects for Tesla, which included two new buildings, each comprising over 2,220 m². Although the smallest of these projects, Unit 4 was not without its challenges, with poor ground conditions, unknown services and drainage, and the availability of cladding to match the existing on this brownfield site.
The foundations are piled, with reinforced ground beams and a suspended power floated concrete floor. The superstructure is steel framed and supports a 15t gantry crane. Above the masonry walls the roof and wall cladding adjoin the existing building on two elevations, necessitating the installation of new windows. This work was undertaken whilst the client was in occupation and was carefully planned to minimise any disruption.
External works including an access ramp were undertaken to blend the extension in to the existing levels.
